MUSICFIT UNDERGROUND
A Manifesto for Artists Who Want to Hurt Less and Play More
We believe artists change the world.
Every time something shifts, it starts with music, art, or story.
Right now, the world is loud, fractured, and tired.
So are the artists.
This is a space for those who are done pretending that suffering is the cost of creativity.
Artist First. Always.
MusicFit is artist-first.
Not venue-first.
Not industry-first.
Not algorithm-first.
If the artist breaks, the culture breaks.
You are the business.
Your body, your mind, and your nervous system are the infrastructure.
Recovery is not a reward or an afterthought…
No. Recovery is the foundation.
Be on time.
Far too often, we demand respect where we have fallen short. I could write a whole book on the reputation of the “flakey” artist. Transient, flippant, whatever you want to call it… we’re done with that reputation. Around here we have a saying…
“If you’re early, you’re on time. If you’re on time, you’re late. And if you’re late, you’re fired.”
This shows respect for everyone else you associate with.
Reliability is kindness.
If this offends you, stop reading here.
Collaboration Over Competition
Competition has a place.
And, competition is a season, rather than a lifestyle.
We collaborate by default.
We compete by choice, in clearly defined containers.
Forget rankings.
Ditch comparison.
Lose the survival games disguised as culture…
If we all rise together, everyone eats.
The Three C’s of Good Gigs
Not every gig is created equal.
A gig must offer at least one of the following three:
Cash – it pays you
Credibility – it builds real reputation
Chops – it meaningfully sharpens your craft
Three is ideal.
Two is workable.
One is charity.
Zero is exploitation.
We stop normalizing bad gigs by collectively refusing them. Kapeesh?
Business Is Recovery First
Think about the oxygen mask on a airplane.
You put it on yourself first so you can help others.
Same rule applies here.
If your business model destroys your health, it is not a business.
It’s a slow exit.
We build careers that last. If you want to burn out, stop reading here.
Art Is Valuable. Art Is Paid.
We reject the myths that “real artists need struggle and pain to make inspiring art” or that asking for money in exchange for our art is sacrilege”
Art feeds people.
Artists deserve to be fed too.
Getting paid does not make you less pure.
It makes you sustainable.
How We Move Through the World
We made it simple. Simple works:
Lead with love
Ask better questions
Grow always, in all ways
Create good trouble
If you run your life like this, your work will follow.
The Brave Act
We are brilliant, resilient artists who walk with agency and a shared vision to empower others.
Bravery is a choice.
We choose clarity over chaos.
The Invitation
If you’re bandless, you are welcome here.
If you’re tired of doing this alone, you’re welcome here.
If you want to build a sustainable career without hurting yourself, you’re welcome here
